Laboratories demand focus, precision, and stamina, often all at once. Long hours spent standing, leaning, or reaching can quietly wear down even the most experienced professionals. By the second or third paragraph of most safety discussions, laboratory casework often enters the picture, and rightly so, since furniture choices influence daily comfort more than many people admit.

Selecting the right setup is not just about looks or storage. It shapes posture, workflow, and long-term health.

Poor casework design invites fatigue, strain, and avoidable errors. Smart choices, made early, can soften those risks without turning the lab into a design experiment.

Prioritize Ergonomic Height and Reach

Casework height decides how the body behaves throughout the day. Benches set too high raise shoulders and strain wrists. Benches too low push workers into a forward hunch that feels minor at first, then lingers for years. Adjustable-height work surfaces offer flexibility, especially in shared labs where users vary in stature.

Upper cabinets deserve similar thought. Shelving placed beyond natural reach leads to repeated stretching, a small motion that adds up fast. Frequently used items should sit between shoulder and waist level, where arms move with less effort and more control.

RDM Laboratory Cabinets and Casework are suitable for Medical Environment Applications

Choose Materials That Support Stability

Fatigue does not come only from posture. It also comes from subtle resistance and vibration during routine tasks. Casework materials matter here. Solid surfaces with minimal flex provide steadiness when weighing, pipetting, or assembling samples.

Drawers and doors should glide smoothly without requiring force. A drawer that sticks demands extra effort each time, turning routine access into quiet frustration. Over time, those movements drain more energy than expected.

Consider Workflow Before Storage Volume

More cabinets do not always mean better function. Overloading a space with storage can force awkward movement patterns. Side-stepping, twisting, and repeated backtracking wear the body down faster than steady linear motion.

A good casework layout follows the rhythm of tasks. Prep, analysis, and cleanup zones should feel intuitive, not scattered. When tools live close to where they are used, motion becomes smaller and smoother. Less motion means less fatigue, plain and simple.

Support Standing and Seated Work

Not all lab tasks demand standing, though many labs treat it as the default. Casework that allows both standing and seated work gives the body variety, which it appreciates more than people think. Knee clearance under benches invites stool use without forcing awkward leg angles.

Footrests integrated into base cabinets also help. They shift weight and ease lower back tension during long procedures. Small design features often deliver the biggest comfort gains.

Pay Attention to Edge Design and Clearance

Sharp edges may look crisp but feel unforgiving by midday. Rounded or eased edges reduce pressure on forearms and wrists. This matters during repetitive work where arms rest on the same surface again and again.

Adequate toe clearance at base cabinets prevents workers from leaning forward unnecessarily. When feet can sit closer to the bench, posture improves without effort.

Factor in Maintenance and Cleanability

Casework that is difficult to clean invites rushed habits. Spills left unattended increase risk, not only from contamination but also from slips or awkward cleaning positions. Surfaces that resist staining and wipe clean without harsh scrubbing reduce both effort and exposure.

Maintenance access matters too. Panels that remove easily prevent technicians from crawling or reaching into tight spaces. The body remembers those moments, even if the mind moves on.

Final Thoughts

Choosing casework with fatigue and risk in mind is less about trends and more about observation. Watch how people move, where they pause, and when they shift their weight. Those quiet cues point toward smarter decisions and a lab that works with its users, not against them.

The post Tips on Choosing Casework That Reduces Fatigue and Risk appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

Not every lab is built the same, but smart choices in material selection can make or break performance. From durability to chemical resistance, the materials used in laboratory casework are selected for a reason and not just because they look clean and clinical. Let’s walk through the ones that show up the most and why they deserve the space they occupy.

Epoxy Resin for Lab Tops

If you’re looking at work surfaces that can take a beating and not flinch, epoxy resin tops sit comfortably at the top of the list. They’re poured, molded, and cured as a single solid slab. That means no glued-on edges or vulnerable seams.

It resists acids, solvents, moisture, and even bacteria. Even under high heat or in wash-down conditions, it doesn’t warp, stain, or swell. It is often the material of choice in research labs, university settings, and chemical testing environments where the unexpected is routine.

Stainless Steel

RDM Stainless Steel Casework is available in a variety of Stainless Steel Cabinet Styles including Base Cabinets and Upper Cabinets

For labs handling biological materials or working in sterile conditions, stainless steel checks many boxes. It shrugs off rust and holds its ground under frequent sanitation. The non-porous surface keeps contaminants from nesting where they shouldn’t.

Though prone to scratches over time, its long life and ease of cleaning outweigh cosmetic scuffs. It’s also fully recyclable, which makes it a thoughtful pick for labs aiming to reduce material waste.

Phenolic Resin

Phenolic resin is often compared to epoxy, but comes with a twist. It’s lighter and often more affordable. It performs well against most chemical agents and has strong resistance to humidity and general wear.

While not quite as durable in extreme heat conditions, it is a worthy alternative for labs focused on biological, pharmaceutical, or educational tasks. It also doesn’t need as much structural reinforcement, making installation simpler in some builds.

High-Pressure Laminate

High-pressure laminate surfaces are common in teaching labs and dry environments. They’re not made to face down caustic chemicals, but they are scratch-resistantscratch resistant, easy to wipe down, and can be designed in a range of colors and patterns for visual consistency or coding zones.

The trade-off: exposure to harsh liquids, prolonged moisture, or heat can cause degradation. Still, in low-risk environments, HPL serves its role well without draining the budget.

Wood

You will still find wood in some casework frames or support structures, particularly in academic or lower-risk settings. Maple, in particular, is favored for its strength and appearance. It is often finished with chemical-resistant coatings to extend its lifespan.

That said, wood doesn’t hold up under constant chemical exposure or sterilization demands. Its inclusion is more about structural support and visual warmth rather than active work zones.

Conclusion

Different labs demand different performance thresholds. The choice of material isn’t about appearances. It is about functionality, resistance, and longevity. Epoxy resin tops dominate for a reason, but every material listed here holds value in the right context. Choosing the right mix keeps lab work flowing and budgets in check.

The post Top Materials Used in Laboratory Casework and Their Benefits appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

Without proper storage, labs start to resemble a science fair gone rogue. Modular steel lab cabinets are the quiet fix to this recurring mess, and no, they don’t require a full remodel or philosophical rethink.

RDM Stainless Steel Upper Cabinets – Model RDM-STAINLESS-STEEL-CABINET-UPPR-01C is a Custom Upper Stainless Steel Wall Cabinet Design. This unit is equipped with two (2) adjustable height shelves.

Here’s how these sleek storage units help labs of all sizes recover valuable square footage.

Start With Vertical Thinking

Most labs get it wrong by spreading out rather than building up. Floor space is finite, but walls are not. Modular steel cabinets make it easy to store supplies in stacked configurations, giving labs a vertical advantage. Wall-mounted upper units keep essentials within reach while opening up countertops for actual work.

Many configurations come with overhead bins or shelving systems that lock into a grid of steel cabinets below. This arrangement clears the bench for the real tasks at hand.

Choose Mobility Wisely

Cabinets with locking casters give labs a smart way to shift storage around without calling in facilities. A mobile unit can live under a bench today and be wheeled into a prep area tomorrow. This is not about reinventing how your lab functions. It’s about responding to a day’s workload with the flexibility of a rolling drawer.

Mobile cabinets are especially useful in smaller setups, where every square foot matters and fixed furniture turns into dead weight. Bonus points if the cabinets are built with reinforced steel that won’t rattle like a shopping cart.

Prioritize What Gets a Home

Not everything deserves a permanent shelf. Modular cabinets help organize based on the frequency of use. For instance, daily-use items like gloves, pH meters, and notebooks should be kept at eye level. The beauty of modularity lies in rearranging layouts without involving an engineering degree.

Full-extension drawers, adjustable shelving, and secure compartments help establish a functional hierarchy. No more opening six doors to find the one reagent you need. Everything has its place, but just not the same place.

Rethink the Corner

Corners in labs often do two things: collect dust and store mystery cables. Modular systems can flip that narrative. Steel corner cabinets fill in those awkward spaces, turning them into productive zones for supplies or instruments that don’t need to sit dead center.

L-shaped configurations or trapezoidal bases allow for tight integration around lab benches. This approach keeps storage symmetrical without looking like a furniture puzzle gone wrong.

Mix Open and Closed Storage

Some items need to stay visible while others need to stay locked up. Open shelving lets you grab a lab manual without fuss. Closed steel cabinets protect chemicals, personal items or confidential materials from curious hands. A modular system lets you use both without any compromise.

Conclusion

Space-saving isn’t about squeezing more into less. It’s about choosing systems that support lab work without getting in the way. Modular steel cabinets bring structure to the madness. They work when the lab is quiet and when it’s running on five cups of coffee and a looming deadline.

The post Space-Saving Tips Using Modular Steel Lab Cabinets appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

They are usually made from materials like stainless steel, phenolic resin and high-pressure laminate, which is resistant to corrosion, moisture and wear. This is a quality that makes it easy for labs to maintain a functional and safe environment for years, even in some of the most demanding conditions.

Chemical and Heat Resistance

Hazardous chemicals and extreme temperatures are very common in most lab environments. Luckily, casework materials like epoxy resin and stainless steel offer a lot of resistance to heat, solvents, and even acids. This prevents any sort of damage and contamination, making it ideal for handling volatile substances or working with high-temperature equipment.

Customization

Every lab has some requirements exclusive to it. The best casework is designed to accommodate those needs. For flexibility, you can go for modular designs, while adjustable shelving, specialized storage compartments, and built-in sinks enhance functionality. From compact workspaces to expansive research facilities, customizable casework ensures that labs operate at peak efficiency.

Ergonomics

Spending long hours in a lab requires furniture that prioritizes comfort and efficiency. Ergonomically designed casework includes height-adjustable workstations, soft-close drawers, and easily accessible storage to reduce strain on scientists and technicians. A well-designed lab layout improves workflow, minimizes fatigue, and enhances overall productivity.

Safety and Compliance

Laboratory casework must adhere to stringent safety regulations to protect both personnel and research integrity. Features like fire-resistant materials, anti-microbial surfaces, and chemical-resistant coatings ensure a secure working environment. Additionally, compliance with industry standards such as OSHA, SEFA, and NSF guarantees that casework meets the highest safety and quality benchmarks.

Sustainability

Modern laboratories are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, and casework is no exception. Many manufacturers now use eco-friendly materials, such as recycled steel, low-emission laminates, and sustainably sourced wood, to reduce environmental impact. Additionally, energy-efficient manufacturing processes and waste reduction initiatives contribute to a greener lab environment. Choosing sustainable casework helps laboratories meet environmental regulations and demonstrates a commitment to responsible practices.

Conclusion

Laboratory casework is more than just storage and work surfaces—it’s an essential component of a well-functioning lab. Its unparalleled durability, chemical resistance, customization options, ergonomic design, and compliance with safety standards make it indispensable in scientific and medical settings. Investing in high-quality casework isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a workspace that fosters innovation, precision, and safety.

The post 5 Qualities of Laboratory Casework That Are Unparalleled appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

Countless people across a great variety of industries and fields can testify that their workplaces are home to an enormous amount of hustle, bustle and action. In particular, certain workspaces — like labs, industrial zones, medical offices and similar places — have peculiar needs which can only be met by a specially designed class of equipment. Such needs can be as variegated as the tools that are built to meet them. But again and again, the constant call for storage space seems to stand out from the pack.

It’s easy to see why. Just consider the vast array of chemicals stocked at a typical research lab or the mountains of patient files that a doctor’s office or a hospital need to have on hand just to conduct everyday business — to give only two examples. Chances are, wherever you work, there’s a tremendous amount of important stuff that either needs to be kept under lock and key when not in use or at least needs to be neatly filed away somewhere so as not to clutter up the area.

Thankfully, there’s a simple solution to this complex problem. A humble set of commercial cabinets and counters can go a long way. Almost no matter what you need stored away or how you need it to be stored, there’s some type of casework that is perfect for your needs.

RDM Industrial Products has proudly built factory-direct and quality-designed industrial furniture of all kinds up to the highest level for more than four decades — though our cabinets and counters have also been particular favorites among our customers.

RDM Laboratory Cabinets & Casework are suitable for Medical Environment Applications.

Below, we’re going to give you a quick explanation of some of the benefits of having industrial cabinets around in your workplace. Then, we’ll launch straight into telling you all about some of the many types and styles of commercial, industrial and laboratory cabinets and counters that we can create for you and what their most important features are.

All in all, your workplace will begetter equipped to handle everyday needs and hum along smoothly as each day surges on.

What Having Quality Cabinets And Counters Can Do For Your Work Environment

Let’s jump straight to brass tacks. Here are some ways that our cabinets and counters can make where you work into a better place:

Storage:

Storage is a cabinet’s primary function. While that’s fairly obvious, it still bears some emphasis. Do you regularly work in a lab with hazardous chemicals? Some stainless steel, fireproof and chemical-resistant laboratory cabinets may be just what the doctor ordered. You can potentially use them to lock away chemicals any other kind of critical tools as well — a consideration that’s important not just for labs but for factories and industrial workplaces in particular. Where would you keep your files without a filing cabinet? Lockers are a must. Especially if you occasionally use things like lab coats, safety suits, gas masks and face shields at work. With the right cabinets, you can store virtually anything.

Convenience:

Closely related to their storage function is the convenience that good casework provides. Once your papers are neatly organized in a cabinet, you’ll have them at your fingertips at all times. If you’re a lab researcher who needs various substances near at hand as you work, we make combination cabinets and counters. You can smoothly integrate storage right into your workstation. If you need anything from gloves and goggles to a power say, stick it in a cabinet and you’ll always know where it is.

Safety:

Places like labs and factories regularly handle many dangerous chemicals and tools. If a particularly volatile or flammable substance is safely locked away in a sturdy cabinet, this sharply minimizes the probability of hazardous lab accidents happening. The same might be said for things like power tools. You can also use commercial cabinets to store safety equipment.

Cost Savings:

Your workplace would be a mess without convenient places to store things. That fact alone means that cabinets will save you significant time. Instead of looking for things, you can focus on work. Beyond this, RDM’s industrial cabinets are durable enough to withstand many years of wear, tear, impact and chemical damage. Since anything can happen at work, you’ll definitely want features like this. They not only contribute to keeping people safe, but mean significant long-term savings on replacement costs.

Customization:

When you order from RDM, we strive to put as much power a possible into your hands. A glance at some of the different types of cabinets we make reveals a wide array of options. But because everything from us is manufacturer-direct, we can also custom-build units for you with special features. If you need cabinets made of a particular material, if you need them to be of a particular size of shape or anything else, just let us know and we’ll customize your units for you.

What Types of Cabinets Do We Make?

RDM manufactures many different types of cabinets. But here is a rundown of some of the basic styles so that you have an idea of what we can do for you:

Standard Cabinets:

These are your simple, standard-style cabinets which you can attach either to your wall overhead or lower down by the floor. Cabinet doors swing open, you can load them up with whatever you want.

Cabinets Attached to Work Counters:

The benefits of this particular type of arrangement have already been discussed. We can build workstations with either a row of floor-level cabinets built right in or with an overhead set of cabinets attached. You thus won’t even have to leave your workbench to grab certain critical items.

Lockers:

Lockers are almost always used to store clothes. If workers need to suit up in a special way for work, whether for their protection or for some other reason, having some lockers around where they can keep their personal equipment is an especially good idea.

PCB Cabinets:

PCB or printed circuit board cabinets are designed to be both insulated against electricity and non-flammable. For additional protection against static electricity, you can also have the unit coated with ESD. The option to place these cabinets on wheels is also available. These units are useful for storing and transporting sensitive and volatile compounds.

Tall Cabinets:

For your heavy-duty storage needs, check out our tall cabinets. Each of these units is seven feet tall. They’re made of metal, contains many shelves and can be outfitted with either sliding or swinging doors.

One final note: We make our cabinets mainly out of either wood or stainless steel. We can add flame-resistant or chemical-resistant coating to our stainless steel cabinets if you require. Options to add epoxy resin, Corian and Trespa are available for some wooden models as well.

Have a look at many of our different cabinet styles here. We also encourage those who are specifically in the market for laboratory cabinets to go here.

Conclusion

With the great versatility and customizability that RDM’s commercial and industrial cabinets place at your fingertips, they’ll be able to make virtually any kind of workplace into a more comfortable and better run place.

Let us get to work building products — all of which we proudly manufacture in the USA — for you.

The post Cabinets and Counters Designed to Meet Your Everyday Needs appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

They are designed to have all the qualities that lab researchers seek. Features that help them get to work on their research or store away crucial equipment when it’s not in use. The basic designs also involve flat work surfaces with a base-level storage area and a set of further storage cabinets placed overhead and attached to a wall. Both parts of this setup are made of stainless steel to make them maximally damage-resistant. We can also custom-design them to be chemical-resistant and/or flame-resistant. Thus enabling them to reliably withstand even the harshest conditions likely to be found in a lab. Overhead storage units can either be suspended from a wall or directly attached to the work surface. Click here to have a look at some of our hardiest stainless steel units.

Lockers and Storage Units:

Our lockers — mainly meant to be used for storing clothes, uniforms and other staff belongings which, for one reason or another, should be kept away from the main work environment — are made of melamine and can be laminated with plastic to give them a glossy finish. Their doors lock securely, so whatever you store in them will be safe. But they are not designed to store hazardous material. For that, some of the other specially designed units that have been mentioned above are more appropriate. Our special storage units, however, hare made of stupider stuff — namely, stainless steel. Their main hallmark, however, is that rather than doors, they use drawers in which to store things. You also have the option of putting them on wheels for the sake of ease of transport.

Standard Service Counters:

These units can be made in a range of different heights between 34 and 48 inches. Beneath their flat work surface are a series of shelves on which workers can store materials that they will need to have close at hand. Units can be made in either a standard straight or an L-shaped configuration.

Work Surfaces for Receptionists:

We also manufacture work surfaces that are ideal for use in a reception room, where workstations tend to be larger. Such workstations can come with file drawers and pedestals for the receptionist’s use. Plus its upper surface can be customized to be anywhere between 36 and 48 inches off the ground. It can even be made with a cantilevered lower-level desk surface with a variable height of between 28 and 30 inches.

Demonstration or Display Surfaces:

If you need surfaces on which to leave certain items on display — not necessarily for workers to perform continuous daily tasks at — then RDM has you covered as well. Like our PCB units, these can also be made of either MDF, lightweight MDF, plywood or particle boards. We can laminate them for you with plastic, or give them a melamine finish. And we can outfit them with containment curbs to ensure that the objects you place upon them don’t roll or fall off. If you need us to, we can even make these units chemical-resistant.

What you’ve seen here is only a rather rudimentary discussion of what we can offer you. Once you factor in all of our many customization options, the set of possibilities explodes. For a deeper look into out different custom cabinets and casework, click here.

General Features of Cabinets, Counters and Casework

We’ve already alluded to some general features above. Here are a few more specific custom features that we can add in to the units you order and how they can enhance your workplace:

Stainless Steel Construction:

The benefits of having units made of stainless steel are fairly obvious. Included in the list is, longevity, strength, reliability, safety, etc. If your workplace is one where these qualities are needed, check out our stainless steel options.

Special Surface Options:

Here, we have in mind the ability to coat the surfaces of our units to give them various special properties. Such as, flame-resistance and chemical-resistance. In addition to these two big and popular options, we can also coat many surfaces in ESD to curb the transmission of static electricity. Some other options include Trespa TopLab, epoxy resin, Trespa Athlon and corian. Any and all of these can be of critical importance in a lab setting, depending on the sorts of chemical agents you’ll be working with. That makes safety the primary benefit of all of these options.

Workplaces that Stand to Benefit

Now that you’ve seen what kinds of units we have and what they can do, what kinds of workplaces have been, and continue to be, enhanced by their use. Here are just a few:

laboratories of all kinds, whether they’re involved in research, design or anything else

university and high school science labs

medical schools

office buildings of any kind with reception rooms

stores wishing to give customers a look at their products

Conclusion

Without a good place to work, it won’t be possible to do much work. And without places to store materials, operations in a great many workplaces will be stymied.

As any good manager knows, labs are not so different from complex machines. Many moving parts need to fit together before they can run at their full potential. They teem with the hustle and bustle of constant activity as experiments are performed, samples are taken, tools are transported, waste is removed and an endless list of tests are performed.

We need many things to keep these complex machines well-oiled and running. Quality-designed cabinets may be simple and humble contributors to this effort. But their crucial place can sometimes be overlooked precisely because they are such simple things. This, however, only makes them all the more important.

When your lab is well-stocked with important but dangerous chemicals, where will you store them when they are not in use? How will you make sure that they don’t accidentally get released and cause serious damage? How will you protect your lab personnel from the dangers these chemicals might pose? Where and how will you store your tools? Industrial-quality laboratory cabinets & casework can be the answer to all of these questions and more.

With more than 40 years of experience, RDM Industrial Products has been designing all kinds of laboratory furniture up to the very highest standards of quality. Here’s a look at some of the different types of laboratory cabinets & casework that we have on offer and what they can do for your lab.

RDM LAB FUME HOODS & CASEWORK shown with Recessed Pulls and Sliding, Frameless Glass Door Upper Wall Cabinets.

What Can Lab Casework Do For You?

Before we get into the weeds and share with you some of the various types of lab cabinets that we can make for you, let’s answer some practical, down-to-earth questions first. Why does your lab need good casework? What can cabinets do for you?

Storage: This may seem like an obvious thing, but it bears belaboring. At the bottom, a cabinet is just an enclosed compartment where you can store things. Your lab workers’ stock of chemicals alone will be a major thing requiring secure storage. but other things will require storage capacity as well, like extra gloves or goggles. Whenever anyone at a workstation needs something close at hand, a cabinet is an excellent place to leave that thing waiting.

Versatility: We know that in the lab, as in life, nothing is ever truly one-size-fits-all. That’s why we manufacture cabinets that both large and small. We can make them out of a variety of different materials, fashion them into different shapes, and either attach them to workbenches or have them be standalone units put up on the wall. One of our goals is to offer you the versatility you need to meet your challenges.

Safety: “Safety First!” is a common mantra in a wide variety of dangerous settings. It’s a mantra one should never lose sight of the fact that the lab can be a dangerous place. With its profusion of caustic and potentially hazardous substances, a lab can be something of a powder keg. With properly designed cabinets, however, you can greatly mitigate these hazards and keep everyone safe.

Durability and Longevity: Everyone wants equipment that will last, something that can handle the stresses and rigors of everyday use. That’s why we build our cabinets to last for years and years.

Cost Savings: Good casework can also save lab managers money in a variety of ways. Since our units are built to last a long time and can reliably absurd damage, you will save money on replacement costs.

What Kinds of Features Do Our Cabinets Have?

Now that you have some idea of how and why casework is so important to make your lab run smoothly, you should know a bit about how RDM’s factory-direct cabinets can provide you with the benefits we’ve discussed. What features do our cabinets have? What styles can we make them in? Here’s some idea of how we can make the magic happen:

Tough, Reliable Materials: We make cabinets out of two main materials: stainless steel and wood. When storing more heavy-duty materials, metal laboratory cabinets can be just what the doctor ordered. For simpler or less high-priority items, wooden cabinets can still be a convenient storage tool. Our metal laboratory cabinets can be further customized with all sorts of other features, both aesthetic and practical. Some of these include a wide selection of colors, adjustable shelves, removable backs, static resistance, plastic lamination, sound headed doors and drawer heads, and more. For more details, click here.

Chemical Resistance: We the ever-present danger of caustic chemicals in the lab, it’s clear that you’re going to want to store dangerous acids and other volatile or reactive substances in places that designed to subdue or resist reactivity. Luckily, RDM can make chemical resistant cabinets that are up to the challenge. If even the roughest acids spill on them, they’ll stay in one piece. You can get a more detailed look at how we can design and equip chemical-resistant cabinets here.

Fire Resistance: Sometimes, sparks fly in the lab. Often, significant amounts of heat are necessary to kick-start reactions. Other times, you’ll have to make use of some highly flammable chemicals in the course of your work. We can make flame-resistant cabinets to prepare you for any eventuality. You can learn more about our flame-resistant cabinets and how we can customize them for you here.

If you decide that you need laboratory cabinets & casework with any combination of these features, we can custom design them for you. None of these important features need necessarily exclude the others. Tell us about your requirements, and we’ll fashion the casework to meet them.

Laboratory Exhaust Fume Hoods

Though technically more than a mere lab storage device, laboratory exhaust fume hoods are nevertheless extremely important tools that can serve certain related critical functions. Fume hoods are meant to keep dangerous gases from spilling out into the general lab environment. They provide sealed off workbench enclosures where researchers can set off chemical reactions that release toxic fumes. Simply place the fume hood around your workbench to hermetically seal off the environment, and you’re good to go.

There are two basic types of laboratory exhaust fume hoods. The distinction between them is based on how they treat and remove noxious fumes. First, ductless fume hoods capture dangerous gases and immediately funnel them to the outside environment, well away from the lab. Ducted fume hoods, on the other hand, will capture the dangerous gas and run it through a filtration system until it is no longer dangerous. What remains can then safely be released back into the lab.

Like cabinets, therefore, fume hoods are critical for keeping dangerous substances away from lab personnel. Which type of fume hood to get for your lab is a personal decision that will vary according to circumstance. Rest assured, RDM is ready to supply you with either type. RDM laboratory fume hoods are a must have addition to round out your laboratory cabinets & casework solution.

Conclusion

Without good cabinets dotting the landscape of your lab — whether near the floor on your workbenches or hanging from the walls — things are bound to become a mess in many more ways than one. Since you can use them to store virtually anything, they are crucial to giving your lab a sense of orderliness, safety, and direction.

All of RDM’s industrial-grade laboratory cabinets & casework, as well as all of our other lab furniture, are proudly manufactured in the USA. Have a look at the full range of our laboratory cabinets & casework today and let us take your lab up a notch.

The post Diverse Laboratory Cabinets & Casework Designs to Meet Your Needs appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

A laboratory is nothing without proper cabinets and casework. An active lab of any reasonable size is bound to be teeming with all sorts of chemicals, tools and substances, many of which are volatile and potentially dangerous. These will absolutely need to be stored away when not in use.

There are lab cabinets and casework of many different kinds. But stainless steel cabinets stand head-and-shoulders above any other type that you could possibly choose to supply your lab with. In nearly all important situations and for nearly every major purpose, stainless steel casework brings significant advantages to the labs that have it.

Here, we’ll go through five major reasons why stainless steel casework is a must for your lab and how RDM Industrial Products can provide you with the factory-direct and industrial-quality furnishings that you need. As you’ll see, these reasons are not always independent of one another. Many of them bleed into one another, which only serves to make the case for stainless steel even stronger.

RDM Stainless Steel Casework is available in a variety of Stainless Steel Cabinet Styles including Base Cabinets and Upper Cabinets

1. Stainless Steel Cabinets are Chemical-and-Corrosion-Resistant

The first priority in any lab should be the safety of all researchers and other lab workers. When your work inevitably requires you to keep some unstable and highly reactive substances close at hand, it’s essential to keep them tucked away in environments where they cannot cause harm. Mishaps with dangerous chemicals may either seriously hurt lab personnel or irreparably damage valuable lab equipment.

The chemical properties of certain compounds make it so that human error is not even strictly necessary for something bad to happen. A chemical placed in the wrong surroundings, stored in the wrong type of storage unit or around the wrong types of other chemicals, can go off and wreak untold havoc.

Corrosion is also a serious long-run danger when dealing with stainless steel equipment because all metal can rust. A lab bench, cart, table, or set of lockers of cabinets become extremely unreliable and virtually useless if it becomes rusted or corroded. When this happens, you’ll need to replace whatever has been corroded.

The importance of avoiding all of this cannot be overstated. Thankfully, RDM manufactures chemical-and corrosion-resistant stainless steel cabinets. Our units can be custom-made to be immune to powerful acids that would chew up weaker materials. This is especially important for casework doubling as a laboratory workbench. As such units allow lab scientists and technicians to work and store their chemicals in the same spot.

2. Stainless Steel is Easy to Clean

Stainless steel has its name for a reason. The metal is totally non-porous and therefore doesn’t retain any moisture or allow leftover chemicals to seep into itself. That makes it easy to clean. Its chemical-resistant properties, mentioned above, also make it able to endure bleach or other aggressive cleaning agents, and that only adds to the ease with which it can be kept sterile. Easy cleaning means fewer headaches for those who do the cleaning.

Cleanliness, sterility, prevention of infections and the like are essential to most labs. Once again, worker safety is paramount. For these reasons, you should never overlook how easy stainless steel casework is to clean.

3. Durability

Steel is tough. It’s difficult to dent and just about impossible to break. Thus, even apart from our ability to beef up your lab cabinets’ chemical and corrosion resistance properties, the fact that they’re made of stainless steel means that they will last and last.

Let’s face it: accidents happen. We all know about the danger of inadvertent chemical spills, but labs often use heavy and cumbersome tools as well. A cart weighed down with tools might accidentally hit a workbench or cabinet and damage it, or a worker might drop something heavy, leading it to crash down onto a work surface and render the surface unusable. If your lab has stainless steel cabinets, any damage from such accident will nearly always be minor.

4. Versatility With a Variety of Options

RDM’s stainless steel furnishings come in a variety of different forms. Of course, we create quality-designed laboratory cabinets of all sizes, but stainless steel’s toughness make it the perfect material out of which to create many other kinds of laboratory furniture as well.

One of our different types of laboratory cabinets are sets of cabinets doubling as work benches and complete with drawers for additional storage and a faucet which you can use to quickly wash off chemicals when needed. The workbench surface itself is highly durable, and we can custom-design each unit to be chemical-resistant, corrosion-resistant, covered in plastic laminate and thus easier to wash, or whatever else you need. The cabinets themselves are at the ground level, beneath the drawers. This setup is particularly convenient for lab workers.

We also manufacture larger cabinets that are up to 84 inches high and have massive doors to keep whatever you place onto the shelves safely locked away. These cabinets can be built with standard swinging doors, sliding doors, doors made of glass or steel, or no doors at all — as suits your preference.

Beyond the cabinets, we also manufacture other miscellaneous kinds of stainless steel furnishings, like carts, workbenches, tables and lockers. All of these come in varying shapes and sizes. Our furnishings can help you make reliable and durable workstations for each of your researchers. Even allowing you to customize things to their specific requirements. Thy can help you store material away when not in use or transport them across the lab with ease and speed when you need them. We encourage you to check out some of our other laboratory furniture as well.

5. Value and Cost Efficiency

We’ve already discussed how tough steel casework is and how it can be specially designed to resist the ravages of caustic chemicals. What we haven’t mentioned yet is how these and other qualities are good for your lab’s bottom line.

Physically durable casework can be used reliably and for a long time. Casework with longevity doesn’t need to be replaced nearly as often. Easily cleanable casework that can keep dangerous chemicals safely in check. This also creates a lab where people are less likely to get hurt though contact with something hazardous. All of these things ultimately mean lower costs for your lab, both in terms of equipment replacement costs and other costs that may accompany injured or incapacitated workers.

It’s especially important for lab managers to understand this. Even though cabinets made of another material like wood may save you lab a few bucks in the short run, stainless steel furnishings will help you accumulate cost savings and will thus more than pay for themselves over the long run.

Conclusion

Every lab needs ample storage space. When you need to store anything important or dangerous, stainless steel is indisputably the ideal material for your cabinets. All of RDM’s stainless steel cabinets and other laboratory furnishings are proudly manufactured in the USA. Have a look at some of our products and pick out what’s right for your lab.

The post 5 Reasons Stainless Steel Cabinets Are Ideal For Laboratories appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

Casework is usually created using more than one material and can include epoxy resin, laminate, or stainless steel. A mix of different cabinet types is also available, including storage cabinets, wall cabinets, steel lab cabinets, locker cabinets, base cabinets, and custom cabinets. There are also many options for drawers, doors, and shelves.

Laboratory casework offers a flexible, customizable, and highly functional solution for laboratory cabinet needs that extend well beyond the benefits of a simple stand-alone cabinet. Besides the obvious storage solutions that are expected from commercial cabinets, laboratories require many other specialized features:

Standard Steel Lab Cabinets

Built with high quality steel, steel lab cabinets are extremely durable and include corrosion-resistant paint technology. The best part – steel lab cabinets can be customized and are available in different designs and styles.

Flame Resistant Laboratory Cabinets

Made from 16-gauge steel, these are not your every-day commercial cabinets. For this reason, they are a great option for storing chemicals and other potentially harmful substances.

Flow Hood Laboratory Cabinets

Also referred to as Laminar Flow Hood Cabinet, Flow Cabinet, or Laminar Flow Workbench, these are sterile enclosures that use a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration system to clean the air. Commonly used in medical research laboratories, these laboratory cabinets are used to prevent contamination by keeping dust, dirt, and particulates out of the cabinet system.

RDM Laminar Flow Laboratory Cabinet – Bench-top Model LF-102P-B-WHITE-02

What type of flow hood do you need for your laboratory cabinet? This is determined by the direction of air flow and the specific protection requirements of the lab. For example, the Vertical Laminar Flow Hood protects both the worker and sample by placing the filter directly above the work area. Contaminated air is directed down from the top, through the filter, and downward through holes in the base of the cabinet. Alternatively, the Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood provides less protection for workers by directing air horizontally, from the back towards the worker. This direction of airflow provides increased protection for products and samples.

Biological Safety Laboratory Cabinets

Biosafety cabinets are similar to laminar air flow cabinets but provide extra protection for laboratory workers and the environment. These types of cabinets are suitable for working with harmful or infectious materials.

Biosafety cabinets are available in a variety of classes depending on the level of protection required:

Class 1 laboratory biosafety cabinets provide protection to lab workers and the laboratory environment. Lab samples, however, are not protected from contamination.

Class 2 biosafety cabinets are used when working with potentially hazardous materials. They provide protection to both workers and lab samples.

Class 3 biosafety cabinets are the best choice when the highest level of safety is required. This option is essential when working with infectious diseases or pathogens. An an air-tight work space protects both workers and the laboratory environment.

For more information about laboratory cabinets and casework click here

The post Commercial Cabinets: What are the Key Features of Laboratory Cabinets and Laboratory Casework? appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.

While furniture pieces like stainless steel workbenches, fume hoods, and utility carts are essential components of a highly productive workplace, one can hardly imagine a lab without casework and laboratory cabinets. Unlike regular cabinets that are easier to purchase, finding the right laboratory casework can be a tedious job, for you will have to consider a number of critical factors. This guide explores some of the essential aspects of laboratory casework, offering tips to make the most of your chosen casework.

Laboratory Casework: the Key to a Functional Work Space

Laboratory casework has become a prerequisite for any productive workplace. Since lab operations are tedious tasks, assembling the lab equipment can help you accomplish the tasks faster. Depending on the unique requirements, there’s a variety of casework options. Some manufacturers also provide customized solutions to allow you to find the right fit. In any case, lab casework and cabinets are essential components of a workplace. It is necessary to make an informed decision to ensure best results. Now that you are informed with how to select the right casework for your laboratory, you can invest in quality cabinets. These are both ergonomically sound and highly functional.

Frame and Material

Casework is made of several components, so it is important to find out more about individual items. For instance, you can find out what type of shelves you will need for your cabinets. The specifications of a frame will enable you to get an estimate of its size, as well as factors like how much weight it can support. With the right set of configurations, installing the casework can be done without any hassles, as you will be fully prepared with what you need to know.

Just getting the right specifications won’t help you make a good selection, for you will need to examine other factors, such as materials and durability. Explore the stores near your house and you will find lab workstations and cabinets crafted in many different materials. Stainless steel is a standard choice when it comes to materials for its ergonomic attributes like chemical and corrosion resistance. Laboratory casework is available of different materials. These include laminate, epoxy resin, etc. Aside from materials, you may want to do a quick search regarding maintenance and upkeep, for lab furniture pieces are a valuable investment for long-term applications.

Finding the Right Casework

You might want to look around to find out what you will exactly need, as there are various kinds of casework available in the market to confuse your decision. Remember, casework is much more than a storage unit. The right casework will help figure out how to organize your workplace so that you have everything you need within your arm’s reach. Depending on your requirements, there are plenty of options available to you, ranging from base cabinets, wall cabinets to supply cabinets. While deciding which casework you will need, it is essential to assess the available space and the nature of the operations to ensure a good purchase.

Final Thoughts

If you are planning to purchase lab furniture, you might have already read the reviews of the available options. The quality of your furniture depends on your service provider. Since buying lab casework is an expensive business, you might want to review your sources. Thus, it will ensure your chosen casework meets all the standard specifications.

The post Laboratory Casework: Making Your Lab More Effective appeared first on RDM Industrial Products.
